Morecambe – Eden of the North.
Future home of Eden Project Morecambe
In his book Notes From A Small Island, Bill Bryson, the famous travel author, wrote: “Its seafront promenade is handsome and its vast bay (174 miles, if you’re taking notes) is easily one of the most beautiful in the world…”
As a result, Morecambe’s burgeoning group of vintage shops are gaining a great reputation amongst vintage fans and collectors, thanks in part to our famous Vintage Festival. The items for sale in our Morecambe shops are much more affordable than in other parts of the country. Our offerings includes clothing vinyl records and nostalgia. Add in our famous Vintage, and music festivals, as well as stunning views and plenty of activities; we have the perfect mix for staycation holidays.
Art Deco and Art Nouveau Trail
Additionally, Morecambe has over 35 surviving Art Deco buildings, and you can see over 20 of them in a pleasant morning’s stroll. On your way, you’ll see the beautiful art deco Midland Hotel, as well as the iconic Victorian Alhambra and Winter Gardens buildings. Take in the Morecambe Heritage Centre along the way, and drop in for a coffee at Brew Me Sunshine, in the old art deco Visitor newspaper building in Victoria Street.
Eating out
Morecambe has what you require. Whether it’s a quick takeaway or a meal in award-winning restaurants and bistros; to a quick fish and chips on the Promenade. We also have some restaurants that consistently rank at the top of Trip Advisor. Fancy pub grub? Sure, we have some great gastro pubs as well as pubs serving your regular pub grub. Dog-friendly, too!
Accommodation for Morecambe Holidays
However you like to lay your head, Morecambe can offer you the solution from our famous 4-star Art-Deco Midland Hotel; mid-range, family or budget; quirky B&Bs, or just a no-frills mobile home.
History
The district’s recorded history stretches back to the Bronze Age, and we keep discovering stuff! At Heysham is one of the earliest Christian settlements at St Patrick’s with the unusual stone-cut graves. Next door is the Grade 1 listed St Peter’s church dating from as early as the 7th century. Inside you’ll find the Viking hogback (grave cover) stone dating from the tenth century. Fancy visiting an English Heritage town? Lancaster was an important Roman settlement and is only three miles from Morecambe. It is the seat of the Duchy of Lancaster and boasts a highly impressive castle. Much of the historic architecture in Lancaster has been preserved.
Morecambe Holidays & Leisure
Whatever your leisure pleasure, Morecambe can certainly offer you plenty. Keen cyclist ? Base yourself here to explore the Bay, or tackle some of the country’s more challenging hills in the Lake District. Fishing? We’ve got your line! Walking? Our vast seaside promenade is perfect for gentle strolls or discover the many walks in our areas of outstanding natural beauty. Festival and events lover? We’re almost embarrassed by our riches in this field. Bird watching? Big tick in that box. Did you know over 250,000 birds over-winter in Morecambe Bay?
Since the Bay Gateway link road opened it’s no lie to say that Morecambe is the closest seaside resort to any motorway in the UK, bar none. On average, it takes approximately 10 mins to get from the M6 to the centre of Morecambe.
Morecambe Bay
Morecambe Bay is six times bigger than Sydney Harbour; has over 250,000 birds over-wintering each year, and is home to three of the twelve tidal bores in the UK. Morecambe Bay is world-renowned as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, as well as a RAMSAR site. In addition, Morecambe has been officially designated as the centre point of the United Kingdom.
Lancaster District also benefits by being almost equidistant between London and Edinburgh/Glasgow, is on the major West Coast rail line, and just off the M6 motorway. It has great transport links to all the major regional cities including Manchester and Liverpool; borders the Lake District; dales and moors; & the Arnside and Forest of Bowland Areas of Natural Beauty.
The recent announcement by the Eden Project that their next UK project will be based in Morecambe, focusing on the marine environment, is destined to propel Morecambe to the next level of desirable destinations meaning that Morecambe will truly be the Eden of the North.

Morecambe BID ‘Safe Morecambe’ Partner with MP Lizzi Collinge to Advocate for Additional Police Patrol Funding Morecambe BID, founders of the initiative Safe Morecambe, have joined forces with Lizzi Collinge, Member of Parliament for Morecambe and Lunesdale, to champion efforts aimed at securing additional funding to continue vital police patrol initiatives. This collaboration comes in response to the remarkable success of Operation Centurion, a programme that has significantly reduced anti-social behaviour (ASB) in the Morecambe BID and Poulton areas. Operation Centurion, funded by £2 million from the Home Office over the past two years, has successfully placed community police officers on the streets in identified ASB hotspots. Since its implementation, the initiative has led to a 30% reduction in anti-social behaviour in key areas, providing a safer and more welcoming environment for residents, businesses, and visitors. However, with existing funding scheduled to expire in January, stakeholders are determined to build on the progress achieved so far. MP Lizzi Collinge has been a vocal advocate of the initiative, recognising its impact on improving community safety in Morecambe. She has worked closely with the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), Clive Grunshaw, to stress the importance of extending the funding for Operation Centurion. Lizzi Collinge MP commented, “Operation Centurion has delivered real, tangible results for Morecambe. The reduction in anti-social behaviour has already made a visible difference to our communities, but there is still significant work to be done. This week I met with the minister responsible for High Streets and we discussed how important action on anti-social behaviour is to renew our high streets. I am committed to pushing for continued funding to sustain the momentum seen in Morecambe and support the safety and well-being of residents, businesses, and visitors, particularly as we prepare for the opportunities brought by the Eden Project Morecambe.” The PCC has also advocated for additional resources to maintain this level of neighbourhood policing. By highlighting the success of Operation Centurion to the Government, the PCC hopes to ensure funding that will enable more patrols and continued focus on tackling local issues such as street drinking, vandalism, youth disturbances, and drug-related crime. Tim Barbary, Chairman of Safe Morecambe and member of the Morecambe BID executive committee, stated, “Safe Morecambe, as an initiative of Morecambe BID, is proud to collaborate with Lancashire Police and our local councils to make Morecambe a safer place to live and work. Operation Centurion has proved that visible, on-the-ground policing can truly make an impact. We are grateful for MP Lizzi Collinge’s support and advocacy in supporting our work to push for extending this initiative. Together, we can ensure a brighter and safer future for Morecambe.” Safe Morecambe, a collaborative group set up by Morecambe BID that includes organisations such as Lancashire Police, Lancaster City Council, and Morecambe Town Council, remains focused on curbing issues that harm the community's vitality. These efforts align with their mission of making Morecambe “Eden-ready” – a safer and vibrant community poised to benefit from the economic and cultural opportunities presented by the Eden Project North. The outcome of these funding efforts is expected to be clearer in early 2025. Meanwhile, Morecambe BID, Safe Morecambe, and MP Lizzi Collinge continue to spotlight the importance of prioritising safety and anti-social behaviour prevention at the heart of local policy-making.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service (Official) (LFRS) is encouraging people to register for a home fire safety check for themselves or their loved ones. By answering a few simple questions, it will provide fire safety advice specific to you and tips on how to keep you and your household safe from fire. For those most at risk, they can visit the home to provide help and advice. Register online (bit.ly/4i6IypG) or call 0800 169 1125. As temperatures drop, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) is urging everyone in Morecambe to heat their homes safely this winter. With changes to Winter Fuel Payments, some households may turn to alternative heating methods like gas heaters, log burners, or electric heaters. While these can help keep the chill at bay, they also carry risks if not used safely. 🛠️ Tips for Safe Heating: Gas heaters & fires: Ensure proper ventilation, regular maintenance, and place a carbon monoxide alarm in the room. Open fires & log burners: Always use a fireguard and have your chimney swept regularly. Electric heaters: Keep them away from flammable items and ensure they’re in good working order. NEVER use outdoor heaters, barbecues, hobs, or ovens to heat your home. These pose a serious risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Make sure you have working smoke alarms on every level of your home.
