More Music’s Catch, the Wind Kite Festival, is an annual event that is a much-loved highlight of Morecambe’s summer calendar. Regularly attracting 20,000 people over the weekend, the festival has been integral to bringing visitors to Morecambe and contributes hugely to the vibrant festival programme helping to make Morecambe a great place to work in, live in and to visit. Catch the Wind also has a significant economic impact in the area, research data collected in 2017 showed that over 50% of the visitors came from out of the district.
Morecambe Business Improvement District (BID) has enabled the festival to spread towards the town centre with additional performances, kite making workshops and spectacular display kites on Central Beach.
Kathryn MacDonald, More Music’s Development Director said, “We really welcome the support of Morecambe BID which has enabled us to extend our programme. This year we will run free workshops in Morecambe Library on 16 June 11am – 3pm and in the Arndale Centre 23-24 June 12 noon – 3.30 pm. On the festival weekend there will be musicians and street performes in the town centre as well as professional kite flyers on Central Beach.”
John O’Neill, Morecambe BID Manager, said: “The Kite Festival is one of Morecambe’s most iconic and loved festivals and we are really pleased to be supporting this event.
“We have worked with the team at More Music to ensure that Morecambe is shown in its best light and wind, of course. Morecambe is a hidden gem amongst the kite surfing fraternity anyway, and this event it another great use of our natural resources. It will be a fantastic weekend, as usual, and another great way of signalling that Morecambe is open for business.”
Ben McCabe, project manager for the festival said, “Working with Morecambe BID is a great opportunity to involve even more people in the festival by bringing a performance space into New Town Square on Saturday and Sunday as well as having professional kite fliers on North Beach.”
