Time and Tide Bell

Welcome to the heart of Morecambe Bay, home to a truly unique artistic gem – The Time and Tide Bell. This creative installation isn’t just a sight to behold but a sound to be experienced. Designed by renowned UK sculptor Marcus Vergette and Australian bell designer Neil McLachlan, this bell is part of a network that rings out across some of the most beautiful coastal locations in the UK.

What is the Time and Tide Bell?

The Time and Tide Bell was installed on the Stone Jetty off the Morecambe promenade on Friday, 8th March 2019. It’s a captivating art installation suspended over the sea, serving as a melodic reminder of Morecambe Bay’s tidal ebb and flow.

The bell is set to ring as the tide comes in or out, with a weight dangling in the sea, triggering the tolling. Each chime is a beautiful echo of nature’s rhythm, connecting us to the ceaseless cycle of the sea. It’s not just a bell; it’s a sonic sculpture, an audible piece of art.

Why visit the Time and Tide Bell?

Morecambe Bay is the largest continuous intertidal area in the UK, fed by five major rivers – the Leven, Kent, Keer, Lune and Wyre. The Time and Tide Bell adds another layer of enchantment to this natural spectacle. As the tide shifts and the bell tolls, you’ll find yourself immersed in a moment of reflection – a connection between art, environment, and the passage of time.

We invite you to visit the Time and Tide Bell to see and hear this extraordinary installation for yourself. Whether you’re a local resident or a visitor to Morecambe, the bell offers a unique experience that connects us all to the timeless ebb and flow of the sea.
